National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coins Proposed

2009 International Year of Astronomy gold coin

The National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act suggests obverse designs that have convex and concave shapes similar to the 2009 International Year of Astronomy commemorative coins by the Monnaie de Paris (French Mint). The Mint images above show the gold coin and its shape.

Newly introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives calls for uniquely designed commemorative coins to recognize and celebrate the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Named the National Baseball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coin Act and numbered H.R. 2527, the legislation would authorize the United States Mint in calendar year 2015 to produce $5 gold coins, silver dollars and clad half-dollars in collector proof and uncirculated qualities.

US Mint Collector Gold Coin Prices Raised for Second Week

Mary Todd Lincoln First Spouse Gold Coins

The United States Mint on Wednesday increased prices on its collector gold coins for a second straight week.

Gold coin prices were raised for the same reason as last week, gains in the yellow metal which lifted the Mint's pricing bar in accordance with its policy. The market price of bullion hit several new records early in the week, which yanked the London Fix weekly gold average into a new tier.

In The Lead – Deal… Or No Deal?

http://www.kitco.com/

Bullion BarsGreek Prime Minister Papandreou's earlier wishes for some concrete EU offerings that would help stave off a negative outcome for his country's debt problems were apparently on their way to becoming true this morning.

Greece was given more time to deal with its Mount Olympus-sized pile of debt and the sense of relief about the step that the EU took overnight was felt as far away as the bond markets of Ireland and Spain.

Proposed Legislation Would End Presidential Dollar Coins

Ulysses S. Grant Presidential DollarThe Presidential $1 Coin Programwould not run its full course if several members of the Senate and House get their way. Two separate pieces of legislation have been introduced in the U.S. Congress which would ultimately end the dollar coins series dedicated to the former Presidents of the United States.

This new legislation comes in response to recent media attention to a reported $1 billion plus worth of dollar coins held in storage by Federal Reserve Banks. (Check out the PDF of the Annual Report to the Congress on the Presidential $1 Coin Program from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.) The massive stash of coins has been building up over the years with a marked increase occurring since the introduction of Presidential dollars four years ago.

Gold Prices Hit Record Above $1,600, Silver Tops $40

Fine Gold BarsU.S. gold prices surged to a fresh record on Monday, its fifth straight, as U.S. and European debt concerns dominated the news. The yellow metal closed above $1,600 an ounce, extending its consecutive string of gains to ten sessions.

"Speculators returned to the commodities' complex in a big hurry and in a big way last week, as the rolling European debt crisis and the stalling US debt ceiling talks prompted a quest for alternative holdings," noted Jon Nadler, Senior Analyst at Kitco Metals Inc.

"On the other hand, so much of the large gains that the markets have witnessed over the past two weeks has been predicated on two basically unlikely events (the demise of the EU and its currency and the default of the US) that any resolution on either front could spark serious scrambles for the exit doors by the same players at any moment."

August gold prices advanced $12.30, or 0.8 percent, to close at $1,602.40 an ounce on the Comex in New York. Prices ranged from a low of $1,591.40 to a high of $1,607.90. The gain pushed gold prices up 12.7 percent for the year.

"There's just a lack of confidence in government and currency," Frank Lesh, a trader at FuturePath Trading LLC in Chicago, said in a telephone interview, according to Bloomberg. "There's a flight-to- safety into gold. When Europe fixes their house and the U.S. fixes our house, maybe then there'll be in a correction in gold."

Silver prices for September delivery rallied $1.271, or 3.3 percent, to $40.342 an ounce, ranging between $39.280 and $40.375. The metal's close above $40 an ounce was its best since May 3. Silver has gained 30.4 percent in 2011.

"Recently gold has outpaced silver; however, with gold reaching a record $1,600 per ounce this morning, we think that silver may play catch-up," said Kathleen Brooks, analyst at Forex.com, in a note that was cited on MarketWatch.

Jim Wyckoff of Kitco Metals Inc. wrote the following of silver in the Monday Kitco Metals Roundup:

"December silver futures prices closed near mid-range and hit a fresh 2.5-month high Monday. The silver bulls have the solid overall technical advantage and gained more power Monday by pushing prices above what was strong psychological resistance at $40.00.

Bulls' next upside price objective is producing a close above solid technical resistance at $42.50 an ounce. The next downside price breakout objective for the bears is closing prices below solid technical support at $38.00.

First resistance is seen at Monday's high of $40.75 and then at $41.00. Next support is seen at $40.00 and then at $39.50. Wyckoff's Market Rating: 8.0."

Platinum prices for October delivery rose $19.90, or 1.1 percent, to settle at $1,775.40 an ounce. Platinum's low for the day was $1,757.00 while its high reached $1,781.60. Platinum prices have fallen a modest 0.2 percent this year.

Palladium prices for September delivery advanced $13.95, or 1.8 percent, to $794.60 an ounce, trading between $781.20 and $796.00. Palladium is down 1.1 percent in 2011.

Earlier fixed London precious metals were higher as well. When comparing London bullion fixings on Monday (PM) from those on Friday (PM), gold prices added $12.00 to $1,599.00 an ounce, silver rose $2.16 at $40.33 an ounce, platinum added $5.00 to $1,765.00 an ounce, and palladium rose $9.00 at $786.00 an ounce.

The United States Mint on Monday published gains in bullion coins for its 24-karat American Gold Buffalo and .999 fine American Silver Eagle. The Gold Buffalo shot up 2,000, raising its July total to 6,000 which tops the 5,500 from the previous month. The Silver Eagle surged 508,500, which notably lifted its 2011 sales to above 24 million. Last year's annual 34.6 million record will be broken in September at the current sales pace.

How Gold Performs During Deflation

Despite the undue attention that has been paid to the chimera of inflation
this year, it should be clear by now that deflation is the far greater
structural problem. One clue that deflation, not inflation, is the main
issue can be seen in the biggest form of savings and investment among the
U.S. middle class, namely real estate.

Gold Prices Hit Record, Silver Retreats

Fine Gold BarsU.S. gold futures closed to a record Tuesday, extending a winning streak to six sessions. August gold prices rose $13.10, or 0.8 percent, to $1,562.30 an ounce on the Comex in New York, topping the previous settlement record of $1,557.10 set on May 2. Gold traded between $1,541.10 and $1,556.10.

"With the currency volatility and the debt-contagion risk in Europe, investors are gravitating toward something tangible like gold," Adam Klopfenstein, a senior strategist at Lind-Waldock, was quoted on Bloomberg.

"If you live in Greece, you are going to buy gold because that's the hard money you still trust, and we know that the Federal Reserve wants to debase the dollar," Axel Merk, portfolio manager who oversees $700 million in mutual fund assets at Merk Investments, said according to Reuters. "If a lot of people believe that gold is the alternative currency, its price will be going up," Merk said.

Silver prices for September delivery closed to $35.634 an ounce, falling 6.4 cents or 0.2 percent. Silver moved between $34.810 and $36.075. Jim Wyckoff of Kitco Metals Inc. wrote the following about silver Tuesday:

"December silver futures prices closed nearer the session (high) Tuesday after being under selling pressure early on. The silver bulls have the overall technical advantage in silver. The next downside price breakout objective for the bears is closing prices below solid technical support at the June low of $33.42. Bulls' next upside price objective is producing a close above solid technical resistance at $37.84 an ounce. First resistance is seen at Tuesday's high of $36.07 and then at $36.50. Next support is seen at $35.50 and then at $35.00. Wyckoff's Market Rating: 6.0."

Platinum prices for October delivery rose $8.00, or 0.5 percent, to settle at $1,736.30 an ounce. Platinum touched a low of $1,710.50 and reached a high of $1,737.50.

Palladium prices for September delivery remained unchanged at $767.45 an ounce. They traded between $747.75 and $769.35.

London precious metals declined across the board. When comparing London Fix prices on Tuesday (PM) from those on Monday (PM), gold prices declined $5.00 to $1,550.50 an ounce, silver plunged $1.45 at $34.91 an ounce, platinum fell $8.00 to $1,723.00 an ounce, and palladium declined $13.00 at $757.00 an ounce.

United States Mint bullion gains on Tuesday were limited to the one-ounce American Gold Eagle. It advanced 1,000 and stands at 522,000 for the year. The Mint on Tuesday also reported that sales of its America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins rose 2,800 as of Monday. June 2011 Sales of American Gold Eagle Bullion Coins Nosedive

2011 American Gold Eagle Bullion Coin

Demand waned sharply for American Gold Eagle bullion coins in June 2011. United States Mint sales of the investment grade coins dropped to 61,500 ounces. The level was the lowest since December 2010 and the weakest month of June since 2008.

While bullion coin sales generally dip during summer months, last month's total represented a steeper-than-normal 42.5 percent decline from the 107,000 ounces of gold sold in May. And in a stark contrast, companion Silver Eagles scored their best ever June. Their sales were 3,402,000, which was down only 6.9 percent from the previous month.

Available options for the American Gold Eagle include one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce and tenth-ounce sizes. Buyers preferred the largest of the 22-karat Gold Eagles by a substantial margin. The quarter and tenth-ounce sizes in June actually outperformed their previous May sales. United States Mint gold bullion coin sales by size, month and over the last year follow:

American Eagle Silver bullion coins continue to move at a record-setting sales pace. The latest United States Mint sales figures indicate that last month was the best ever June for the .999 fine silver coins. June also ranked in the top ten for all-time monthly sales.

Despite an allocation policy by the United States Mint which limits the number of Silver Eagles distributors can purchase, 3,402,000 were sold in June 2011. The level ranks as the seventh best in monthly sales for the American Eagle, marking a significant milestone given that the series was introduced a quarter of a century ago.

Gold Rallies $30, Silver Prices Surge 5.1%

Fine Gold BarsU.S. gold futures rose $30.10 Tuesday, registering their biggest single day pick-up since early November. Reports of a potential rate increase in China and a poorer credit outlook for Chinese banks were among factors analysts proffered for gains.

"Certainly, the Chinese stories this morning have helped (gold)," said Credit Suisse analyst Tom Kendall, according to Reuters. "We have seen a bit of buying coming back in from some of the institutional names that have been absent for a while, and positioning in gold is a lot less from shorter-term players than it has been."
