Bills Seek to Change Cents and Nickels to Steel

Steel Appearing Cents

Two new bills would have the U.S. Mint use steel in cents and nickels

The metallic composition of cents and nickels would be changed if newly introduced legislation becomes law. According to two separate bills introduced on December 15, 2011, America's two lowest denominated coins should be struck primarily from steel.

Congressman Steve Stivers of Ohio introduced the proposed changes as part of the Cents and Sensibility Act, H.R. 3693, and the Saving Taxpayer Expenditures by Employing Less Imported Nickel Act, H.R. 3694, also known as the STEEL Nickel Act. Taxpayer savings was the reason given for each.

US Mint Sales: 2011 Commemorative Coins Rally in Finish

US Mint 2011 Commemorative Coins

U.S. Mint image showing several of the 2011 commemorative coins which went off sale Friday

The newest United States Mint sales figures show that 2011 commemorative coins enjoyed a mini-rally during their final days as did nearly every Presidential $1 coin product.

With those excluded, however, overall product sales remained a bit soft like they were this time last year. Both years the Mint has imposed Christmas shipping deadlines of December 12. That tends to drive selling volumes earlier in the month with resulting sluggishness right before the holiday.

Another type of deadline hit this year's commemorative coins celebrating the U.S. Army and Medal of Honor. On Friday, December 16, the Mint stopped selling them after 5 PM ET to keep in line with mandates that permit their issuance only in calendar year 2011.

Gold, Silver Rise Friday but Plunge on Week, US Mint Bullion Coins Surge

Fine Gold BarsModestly paring weekly losses, gold and other precious metals rebounded Friday as the U.S. dollar pulled back and investors stepped in to buy on the bargain.

"Some people were taking the opportunity to scoop it (gold) up at lower levels. And, it's still up year to date. So, it wasn't surprising that people wanted to sell it off to raise cash for the year end," Reuters quoted David Lee, metals trader at Heraeus Precious Metals Management in New York.

A stumbling euro had boosted the greenback for most of the week, and that translated into weekly losses of 6.9% for gold — its biggest weekly fall in nearly three months, 8.0% for silver, 6.5% for platinum and 8.9% for palladium. Palladium's drop was perhaps a bit more stinging having been the only precious metal to rally last week.
