Ted Butler: U.S. government is part of the war on silver
Silver market analyst Ted Butler writes today that he has come to believe that the U.S. government, while not the instigator of the silver price manipulation scheme, has become a participant in it and that the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, which has purported to be investigating the silver market for nearly four years, has been neutered by the U.S. Treasury Department, which has given its market-rigging agent, JPMorganChase & Co., immunity from criminal prosecution.
None of this should be so surprising, as even Butler himself has noted that when the U.S. government demonetized silver in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed that the government would intervene in the silver market as necessary to keep the price down, presumably by dishoarding from the government's silver stockpile.
Signing the demonetization legislation, the president said:
"Some have asked whether our silver coins will disappear. The answer is very definitely — no. Our present silver coins won't disappear and they won't even become rarities. We estimate that there are now 12 billion — I repeat, more than 12 billion — silver dimes and quarters and half dollars that are now outstanding. We will make another billion before we halt production. And they will be used side-by-side with our new coins. Since the life of a silver coin is about 25 years, we expect our traditional silver coins to be with us in large numbers for a long, long time. If anybody has any idea of hoarding our silver coins, let me say this. Treasury has a lot of silver on hand, and it can be and it will be used to keep the price of silver in line with its value."
Johnson's comments have been archived with other presidential documents by the University of California at Santa Barbara here:
http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/ws/?pid=27108
Of course Johnson's promises about keeping silver coins in circulation and keeping silver's price down were not fulfilled. The government's silver stockpile was exhausted and U.S. silver coins did indeed disappear from circulation. But the government's interest in suppressing the price of the monetary metal, suppressing the value of a competitive currency, endures.
Indeed, like so much in the U.S. government's gold price suppression scheme, the silver price suppression scheme is largely a matter of official public record rather than mere "conspiracy theory." But GATA has no idea what it will take to induce mainstream financial journalists to examine the official public record, even as we keep urging them to do so.

U.S. Dollar Danger Threatens Gold as Euro Hits 2-Yr Low
WHOLESALE gold bullion prices fell to 69 an ounce during Monday morning's London trading – 0.9% off Friday's close – as stocks, commodities and the Euro also traded lower and US Treasuries gained, following news that two Spanish regions plan to ask for bailouts.
Silver bullion fell to .88 an ounce – a 1.9% drop on where it ended Friday.

Silver Price Undervalued
After being sucked into the general commodities correction, silver has been relentlessly drifting lower since late February. But this weakness has forced the white metal down to a very bullish place technically. Silver is now quite undervalued compared to prevailing gold prices, its primary driver. Thus it has great potential to rally mightily in the coming months to regain much lost ground relative to gold.

How Gold Will be Made Acceptable by the Powers that Be
The critical requirements of gold's return to the monetary system are twofold:
It must easily dovetail into the current monetary system.
It must provide a workable application, right down to consumer level.

Gold to Outshine U.S. Dollar
As the price of gold has gone up fivefold over the past 10 years, why would one buy it at today's prices? For the same reason an investor would buy any other asset: if one believed it would be a good investment now, that is if one believed it may appreciate in value and add portfolio diversification benefits. A key reason to hold gold today might be to prepare for the crisis tomorrow.

The Silver Price Enigma: Buying Low, Trading High
In an investment environment where savers are being punished by sustained inflation and historically low interest rates, at least silver offers an alternative to those investors who can see the writing on the wall regarding the questionable future of intrinsically worthless fiat currencies.

Global Stock Markets Uptrend Ready to Resume
Overall it was a good week for the US stock market. The SPX eclipsed its previous uptrend high at 1363, on its way to 1375 on tuesday. Then after the mid-week holiday a pullback followed, from extremely overbought condtions. By week's end the SPX/DOW were -0.7%, but the NDX/NAZ were flat. Overseas markets were mixed as well, with Asia +1.3%, Europe -1.1%, and the DJ World index -0.2%. On the economic front it was another positive week with positive reports outpacing negative ones 7 – 3. On the downtick: ISM manufacturing/services and investor sentiment. On the uptick: construction spending, factory orders, auto sales, the ADP index, the WLEI, plus Payrolls rose and weekly jobless claims declined. Next week we'll have the FOMC minutes, the twin deficits and the PPI.

At Long Last the Euro Is Finally Being Saved
Friday the 29th of June 2012 will go down as one of the most important dates in the history of the Euro
currency. In the early hours of that fateful morning German resistance to a rational and comprehensive
resolution to the Euro crisis was finally crushed. It will take some time for the full implications of this
historic result to filter through to the markets but the fact that the dark cloud of dissolution of the Euro is
now passing can only be positive.

Collector American Eagle Coin Prices Reduced
Friday, June 29, 2012
Gold closed in New York at $1,557 and the picture looked glum. Ahead of London's opening goldhad jumped ton $1,570, while the euro jumped strongly to €1: $1.2589 from $1.2450, 140 cents higher. The gold Fix was set at $1,569.50 the same as yesterday and in the euro €1,258.50. Ahead of New York's opening, gold jumped to $1,584.00 and in the euro, €1,257.64 while the euro was at €1: $1.2595.
Silver Today – Silver closed in the States at $26.44 then jumped to fixed at $27.08 at the London Fix. Ahead of New York's opening at $27.33.
Gold (very short-term)
Gold will follow the euro, today in New York.
Silver (very short-term)
Silver will follow the euro, today in New York.
Price Drivers
Gold & Silver – Traders were caught reading the technical too closely in New York and managed to paint that picture as weak, going weaker. The amazingly the E.U. leaders came out with a plan to use the bailout fund to bailout the banks directly [plus other more cosmetic moves]. Spain's 10-year yields exceeded 7% yesterday and Italy auctioned 10-year notes at 6.19%. Germany borrows at 1.5% for the same time periods. These moves should see these costs drop heavily and boost the prospects for the continuation of the E.U., until real banking Union in the E.U. is achieved, improve.
This positive step caught a jaundiced market off guard and they all reacted positively including goldand silver. The euro rallied a full one percent immediately taking the precious metals with it. Why, because the markets read this as a weakening dollar and have built in a knee jerk reaction thatgold goes the opposite way to the dollar. That's why the gold price jumped $23 before London even opened.
The question is, does the market see this as halting the banking crisis in Europe? If so the euro will get stronger and take gold with it. If not, then expect more consolidation.
Of note was the speed gold turned around from what appeared to be a break in support. Traders are becoming hesitant to push gold and silver down further.
Silver – Silver jumped higher outpacing gold right through $27 as it continued to react to monetary news and follow the euro. This reaffirmation of its close ties to the gold price and the euro implies that it will as strong as the E.U. leaders resolve to bolster the Eurozone.
