Gold Jumps Above $1200, Silver Soars

Bullion update ...Precious metals rallied on Wednesday. New York gold futures rose 1.3 percent and above $1200 an ounce, marking a third straight day of gains. Euro zone debt turmoil was again center stage, prompting safe-haven buying.

Other metals enjoyed deeper support, with silver surging 3.0 percent, platinum rising 2.6 percent, and palladium jumping 3.7 percent.

Crude oil recovered from a 2.1 percent loss on Tuesday to advance the most since September with a $2.76, or 4 percent increase.

U.S. stocks experienced another late-day rally, but this time indexes were driven lower. The Dow fell back below 10,000 for the first time since early February.

A Los Angeles native, David's 24+ years of Classical numismatic experience includes a specialty in Roman Imperial coinage, with an extensive background in Greek, Byzantine, Dark Age and Medieval coins as well.

Heritage Promotes Cristiano Bierrenbach to Vice President of International Numismatics

Cristiano BierrenbachDALLAS, TX — Heritage Auction Galleries (HA.com) has announced the promotion of Cristiano Bierrenbach to the position of Vice President of International Numismatics.

 

"In the short time Cris has been with Heritage, he has become instrumental to the impressive growth enjoyed by our World Coin category," said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. "Cris will continue to drive our World Coin category growth here in the U.S. while working to expand our role into a leadership position in markets abroad."

 

Bierrenbach started at Heritage in January 2008 and his impact on the business was almost immediate. That same year, the NYINC auction totaled $4.3 million. Within one year, at the January 2009 NYINC show, the auction total had almost doubled to $7.2 million. By January of this year, 2010, the NYINC auction total was more than $11.5 million.

Boy Scouts Coins Edge to Sell Out, DAV Commemoratives at 57.9% Max

2010 Boy Scouts Centennial Commemorative CoinIt has been slower going of late for the remaining proof 2010 Boy Scouts Commemorative Silver Dollar.

A sell out of the coin could happen at any time with only 5,039 left, but the pace edged slightly slower with buyers picking up 2,381 more compared to last week's reported 3,437.

The uncirculated version sold out exactly one month ago today. Their numbers continue to be tweaked as returns, cancellations and standby orders are processed.

Bullion update ... Sabres Rattle, Bulls Do Battle

Good Morning,

Additional overnight gains in precious metals were prompted by continuing Old World debt-related jitters and more so, by nervousness over the "by-now-normal" May geopolitical stuntsmanship by North Korea's Kim Jong-il. Mr. Kim tested a nuke in May 0f 2006 and the UN threatened him with a 'time out.' It is May again, and it must be time to ratchet tensions up.

The two Koreas have engaged in a (hitherto verbal) war over who did/said what. The North severed some ties with the South, apparently taking offense at being accused of sinking an SK warship. Loudspeakers blaring propaganda across the border have once again been wheeled out in certain areas of the DMZ. So have several large electronic billboards flashing "anti-whatever-the-other-side-says" messages.
