Gold Prices Rebound to Top $1210, Silver Gains 1.9%

Bullion update ... U.S. gold prices advanced $14.80 and returned to above $1200 an ounce on Tuesday. Cited factors for the yellow metal's near two-week high included a weaker dollar, higher oil prices and safe-haven buying due to Moody's downgrade of Portugal's debt rating.

Precious metals climbed as a group. Silver gained 1.9 percent, platinum climbed 1.3 percent and palladium jumped 3.3 percent.

In other markets, crude oil futures rallied nearly 3 percent while U.S. stocks surged with major indexes advancing between 1.4 percent and 2.0 percent.

Army and Air Force Exchange Service Promotes $1 Coins

Military exchanges around America are beginning to promote the use of $1 coins in daily transactions, according to an announcement by the United States Mint.

The four 2010 Presidential $1 dollar coins

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) has kicked off an initiative at several retail stores to encourage and use Presidential and Native American dollars regularly, with plans to eventually expand their usage in all 1,703 AAFES locations.

2009 Jefferson Nickels and Roosevelt Dimes Values

Roosevelt Dime Looking back to last year, 2009 was filled with a roller-coaster of events relating to the coin collecting world. Among the many highlights, new coin releases such as the Abraham Lincoln Commemorative Silver Dollar and the four redesigned 2009 Lincoln Cents are sure to be recalled by anyone even slightly familiar with the hobby.

The sharp US Mint June coin production increases may further jog the memory, reminding collectors of the historically low mintage levels in 2009. For the entire year, just 3,548,000,000 circulating coins were produced.

In comparison, 2008 had a production total of more than 10.1 billion and 2007 came in even higher over 14.4 billion. In fact, the last time the US Mint had circulating strikes at such a low level was forty-plus years ago.

Bullion update ... Dancing With the (Fund) Stars: Let's [Con]Tango!

Good Morning,

Yesterday's downturn in gold was followed by an overnight bounce of fairly sizeable proportions. Once again the metal's price gyrations occurred without much of an obvious impact from news-related external factors (aside from the Portugal downgrade story, relayed below).

Actually, the rebound also took place in the continuing absence of Indian physical buyers whose orders for bullion now appear to be spread out from just under $1190 and towards much lower levels, according to our local sources. Bullion may also have been helped by a slump in Chinese shares overnight as the Beijing government indicated that it has no intention of relaxing its anti-bubble combat stance as regards property markets in the country.
