July 15, 2010 at 3:00 PM

Bullion update ...U.S. gold prices edged $1.30 higher Thursday as fresh economic worries and a weaker dollar helped spur the modest uptick.

Other precious metals registered slight gains as well, with silver and palladium rising 0.4 percent and 0.3 percent, respectively. In both percent and dollars, platinum was the biggest winner with its $13.10, or 0.9 percent, increase.

In other markets, crude oil futures fell for a second straight day and to below $77 a barrel while U.S. stocks rallied late in the afternoon to slash earlier losses.

July 15, 2010 at 8:05 AM

US Mint Sales Figures ImageThe United States Mint is not seeing a lot of action in numismatic coins as collectors take their traditional summer break from buying. U.S. Mint sales figures show that only four collector products experienced higher demand than the prior week –which was slow in itself, and those were related to older Presidential $1 offerings.

Weekly sales eased for bullion coins as well, but their unit increases continue to be high despite the time of year. Meanwhile, inflation in the country rose by 2.9% last month, following a 3.1% reported growth rate for May.

All of this possibly means that authorities may not need to apply the fiscal and monetary brakes quite as soon and/or as aggressively as first anticipated. In any case, analysts at Citigroup foresee single-digit growth rates for China in coming quarters, and for at least a period of one year.
