Yosemite National Park Quarters in US Mint Bags and Rolls on July 26

2010 Yosemite National Park Quarter Bags and RollsThe United States Mint will offer America the Beautiful QuartersTM bags and rolls, containing quarter-dollar coins honoring Yosemite National Park in California, beginning at noon Eastern Time (ET) on July 26.  The coins, minted at the United States Mint facilities at Denver and at Philadelphia, will be available in two-roll sets priced at $32.95 each and 100-coin bags priced at $35.95 each.

The two-roll sets contain one roll each of 40 coins bearing the P and D mint marks, wrapped in distinctive packaging displaying the name "Yosemite," the abbreviation "CA" for California, the mint of origin and "$10," the face value of its contents.  The canvas 100-coin bags bear tags denoting their mint of origin, "Yosemite," "CA" and "$25," the total value of their contents.(...)

1986 Begins American Eagle Silver Series

1986 served as the inaugural year for the new American Silver Eagles series which have been struck annually ever since. They were only authorized the year before as part of the Liberty Coin Act of 1985, approved by Congress in June of that year and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1985.

Congress created the authorizing legislation in response to political pressure to decrease the national strategic stockpile of the precious metal silver held by the United States. Many felt that the sale of the federally-owned silver could help lower the national deficit...

2009 Presidential Polk $1 Missing Letter Error

A 2009-P James K. Polk Presidential dollar with dropped "T" letter on the edge has been found by John Morris of Florida.

The inverted "T" from either the word TRUST or PRESIDENT is only the second example of a dropped letter on the edge of a Presidential dollar that has been sent in by Numismatic News readers since the inception of the Presidential dollar series in 2007.

2005-P Kennedy Half Dollar Coin Shows Error

Strike-through errors are among a number of interesting errors that turned up recently.

Numismatic News reader, Merle Hyldahl, sent an image of a 2005-P Kennedy half dollar that shows a relatively deep and obvious strike-through error on the obverse. Hyldahl said, "I was recently going through a bank-wrapped roll of 2005 Kennedy half dollars and ran onto one coin that had a large spike running from just north of the 'In' of 'In God We Trust' and running north through Kennedy's nose and into his forehead." ...

Certified coin populations numbers can be wrong

Maybe numbers don't lie, but they can be wrong. In the case of certified coin populations, such as the NGC Census Report, there are a couple of ways the numbers can be wrong. Clerical errors are easily corrected, but another source is more insidious: the re-submission.
