2010 Yosemite National Park Quarter Ceremony on July 29

2010 Yosemite National Park QuarterJoin the United States Mint as it continues its journey to "Connect America through Coins" on July 29, for the launch of the Yosemite National Park quarter-dollar coin.

The ceremony, co-hosted by National Park Service officials, will kick off at 11:00 a.m. Pacific Time (PT) at the Valley Visitor Center.

Following the ceremony, the public can exchange their cash for $10 rolls of the Yosemite National Park America the Beautiful Quarter.(...)

CCAC Meets July 27 to Review 2011 First Spouse & 2012 Presidential $1 Coins

The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) will hold a public meeting from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (ET) on Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel-Downtown Philadelphia, One Dock Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19106.

The purpose of the meeting is to conduct business related to the CCAC's responsibility to advise the Secretary of the Treasury on themes and designs pertaining to United States coinage.

AGENDA:

  • Review of the obverse candidate designs for 2012 Presidential $1 Coins honoring Presidents Chester A. Arthur, Grover Cleveland (1st term), Benjamin Harrison and Grover Cleveland (2nd term).
  • Review of the obverse and reverse candidate designs for the 2011 First Spouse Gold Coin and Medal Programs, honoring Eliza Johnson, Julia Grant, Lucy Hayes and Lucretia Garfield.

WHO:

Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC)
Pursuant to 31 U.S.C. 5135, the CCAC was established to:

  • Advise the Secretary of the Treasury on any theme or design  proposals relating to circulating coinage, bullion coinage, commemorative coins, Congressional gold medals, and national and other medals produced by the Secretary;
  • Advise the Secretary of the Treasury with regard to the events, persons, or places that the Committee recommends to be commemorated; and
  • Advise the Secretary of the Treasury with respect to the mintage level for any commemorative coin recommended.

Three-cent coin victim of size

For many years there has been an obvious bias among collectors in favor of coins made of precious metals and coins of large diameter.

The winners of this set of preferences have been coins like Morgan dollars, Walking Liberty halves and American Eagles. In the case of the silver American Eagle, it copied the basic size of the Morgan dollar and swiped the design of the Walker.

To be technically correct, it should be noted that the Morgan dollar is 38.1mm and the silver American Eagle is 40.6mm. But that is close enough to make the point: Big and precious is good, small and base metal is, well, not bad but not quite as desirable, either. ...

ANA World's Fair of Money Offers Beautiful and Famous coins

American Numismatic AssociationThe American Numismatic Association's 2010 Boston World's Fair of Money offers some of the world's most beautiful and famous coins, the nation's top numismatists and a venue in the heart of one of America's most historic cities.

Held Aug. 10-14 at the Hynes Convention Center, the show features a spectacular Museum Showcase, the famous Ship of Gold display, more than 1,100 dealers and vendors, 18 mints from around the world, and educational programs for experts, casual collectors and numismatic newcomers.

The ANA Museum Showcase is a dazzling display of numismatic rarities. Highlights include:

  • a selection of beautiful specimens from the ANA Bebee Collection of U.S. Paper Money;
  • a complete set of 1874 Bickford pattern coins, courtesy of Bob R. Simpson; and
  • the Smithsonian Institution exhibit "Gold as Gold: America's Double Eagles," including the first (1849 pattern) and last (1933) double eagles produced.
