Bowers and Merena AuctionsIrvine, CA Bowers and Merena Auctions, a leading rare coin and currency auction house, will present one of the most important U.S. coin rarity auctions in recent years.

Bowers and Merena's Boston Rarities Auction, to be held prior to the ANA's World Fair of Money on Saturday, August 7, will include a 1794 Dollar graded MS-64 (NGC) valued at over one million dollars, and two mid-six-figure coins: an 1870-S Silver Dollar and an 1854-O $20 Gold piece, both key date rarities. In all, over 1,500 coins will be auctioned in the sale.

Gold Rebounds Modestly, Silver Gains 0.8%

Bullion update ...U.S. gold prices pulled back from their six-week low on Wednesday, advancing $3.80 as some bargain-hunters stepped forth to add their support.

Other precious metals continued their climb which started on Tuesday. Silver rose 0.8 percent, platinum added 0.5 percent, and palladium gained 0.4 percent.

In other markets, crude oil rose for the first time in seven sessions while U.S. stocks rallied with major indexes jumping between 2.8 percent and 3.1 percent.

US Government Prints 547.8 Million Banknotes in June 2010

BEP Production FiguresThe U.S. government printed fewer bills in June than in May, making the month the third busiest in 2010, according to figures from the agency responsible for manufacturing U.S. currency. The value of the banknotes produced in June reached the second highest monthly level this year, right behind May.

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) on Thursday released the latest production numbers for June which show it made $1s, $5s, $20s and $100s — the same denominations that were printed between February and May. $10s and $50s continue in a holding pattern, having not been printed since June 2009.

Dealers Praise Easy Access to Coin Grading At PCGS' Paris Office Grand Opening

(Paris, France) — Professional Coin Grading Service successfully opened its European grading center at its Paris, France office on June 7, 2010. Coin dealers from all over Europe visited PCGS in Paris to submit coins for onsite authentication and grading.

Good Morning,

Just one day after letting it be known that it has no intentions of disgorging its dollar or euro foreign exchange reserve holdings, the Chinese State Administration for Foreign Exchange said that gold cannot be considered as a mainstream investment vehicle for its reserves.

The reasons? The same ones we have often attempted to cite in these very columns: a small market, limited availability of large amounts, liquidity problems related to sizeable amounts.
