Carson City Gold Coins Attracting Collectors
July 26, 2010 at 11:07 PM

With the summer coin season upon us, it appears that bullion coins will lead the way for the next couple of months.

Bullion sales are supporting the overall coin market as dealers report that more than 50 percent of their sales comprise modern bullion coins and related items. Keep in mind that some dealers do not participate in the bullion market and think business is still good. Of course, most of them deal in high-quality collector coins or high-end rarities, and the collectors ...

Tips from the Grading Room
July 26, 2010 at 11:03 PM

Welcome to the second installment of "Tips from the Grading Room." In the last issue, we took a look at what constituted a "Full Head" Standing Liberty Quarter. This time, we'll examine another important qualifier – what must qualify for a Full Band Winged Liberty Head or "Mercury" dime, designated "FB" by PCGS.

Full Bands (FB) is the designation following the numerical grade of some regular-strike Mercury dimes that have fully separated horizontal bands on the...

Dozens of gold and silver coins hidden nearly 300 years ago were found Friday when a cannon recovered July 11 from a wrecked Spanish ship was being cleaned for preservation, salvagers reported this week.

Divers from the salvage boat "Gold Hound" brought up the ship's bronze swivel cannon ... Anne Kazel-Wilcox said, "and as workers were conserving it, the cannon became unplugged and coins were found inside." ...

Don't bet on Aussie 5c coin lasting
July 26, 2010 at 10:56 PM

Parking machines in inner-city Perth suburbs such as Leederville have provisions to accept a futuristic $5 coin but deny drivers from using the humble 5c piece to pay.

Acting Town of Vincent chief executive Rick Lotznicker said ticket machines in Vincent had not accepted 5c coins for years. "Most machines can be programmed to accept up to seven different coins," he said. "This currently comprises 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2 and a test token, with the last program being reserved for ...

Crude '5′ in Morgan dollar coin date gives away fake
July 26, 2010 at 10:42 PM

Many counterfeit coins have one side that is more deceptive than the other.  That is the case for the 1895-O Morgan dollar that a dealer and collector asked me to authenticate recently. I found that several characteristics of this fake were interesting enough for me to share with you here.

This fake is die struck. Overall, it is better made than all but a few of the current fakes from China that I have encountered. No telling where or when this coin was made. I have heard that the more money you pay to the manufacturer, the better quality copy you'll ...

Ship of Gold at ANA World's Fair of Money
July 26, 2010 at 10:36 PM

The incredible "Ship of Gold" exhibit, showcasing California Gold Rush-era sunken treasure recovered from the 1857 shipwreck of the SS Central America, will make port in Boston at the American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money, August 10-14 at the Hynes Convention Center. The exhibit is courtesy of Monaco Rare Coins of Newport Beach, Calif.

The SS Central America was recovered in 1988 from nearly 8,000 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. The ship sank in a hurricane in September 1857 while carrying California gold from Panama to New York City.

"There will be examples of historic assayers' ingots as well as San Francisco Mint and California territorial gold coins with a combined value of over $10 million," said Adam Crum, vice president of Monaco. "One of the highlights is a huge Kellogg & Humbert ingot. Weighing just over 55 troy pounds, it is the largest surviving gold ingot of the California Gold Rush." ...

Drought of major coin rarities, interesting collector coins sell
July 26, 2010 at 10:32 PM

The continued drought of major rarities in the auction marketplace was evident at the Florida United Numismatists summer show, held July 8 to 10 in Orlando.

Yet, despite absence of six-figure coins, the sale realized a healthy $7.39 million, although that number is bound to grow as Heritage counts after-auction sales in the total amount realized for an auction.

Eight bidders competed for a 1867 Shield 5-cent coin, graded Proof 65 Cameo by Numismatic Guaranty Corp. It sold for ...
