A team matrix approach will be taken to running future American Numismatic Association conventions, executive director Larry Shepherd told the board of governors during a telephone meeting Sept. 14. The new approach is fleshed out by two promotions and two new hires, he said, following the August resignation of Brenda Bishop, convention services manager. ANA is also looking for a new information technology and website manager following the resignation of David Lighty that is effective in November.

Celebrated Betts "1623" Novum Belgium Copper

Obverse: NOVUM BELGIVM 1623 around a small shield on which is a beaver. Reverse: PETER MVNVIT around a coronet. Denticulated borders. Nice, rich brown surfaces with a hint of mint red still showing. No trace of an undertype (Betts often used other coins as his planchet stock). Accompanied by Ryder's ticket describing the coin as ''A fraud made by Wyllys Betts in 1862 or 1863 when at Yale College.'' Tom Elder unaccountably described the piece in his catalogue as ''Is this a rare pattern for an American Colonial…Who knows about this piece?'' Without doubt this is one of the most famous of all 19th-century tokens.

While most of these notes will carry the title "United States Note" at the top or bottom of their face, some earlier ones actually say "Treasury Note" instead. The very first notes omit both. They are, however, the same according to the legislation that authorized them. They are the longest lasting kind of American paper money, issued from 1862 until 1966. There are a great many different designs, of which the "Bison Ten" is the most famous and most popular. Just like all other currency, United States Notes were reduced in size with the "series of 1928" in 1929. Small-size notes are occasionally found in circulation today, and are characterized by a red Treasury seal. The latter, when worn, are not generally considered collectible.
