| (Long Beach, California) — The Board of Directors of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) met in Long Beach, California on June 2, 2010 and issued the following statement. The Professional Numismatists Guild Board of Directors applauds the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) in its efforts to battle the deceptive practice known as coin "doctoring." The deliberate, deceitful alteration of a coin can pose an egregious financial consequence to individual collectors, investors, dealers as well as the general public. PNG believes the unconscionable practice of "doctoring" is an enormous detriment to the numismatic marketplace. (...) | Buyers spent more money last week for both numismatic and bullion United States Mint coins. 190,000 ounces of bullion American Gold Eagles left U.S. Mint inventories in May. That marks the highest level since 216,000 were sold in June 1999. Mint authorized purchasers also snapped up 70,500 American Gold Buffalos, bringing the total ounces of bullion gold May sales to 260,500. Only one month since the Mint's bullion program launched in 1986 recorded better, and that was January 1999 with 281,000 ounces of gold coins. Bullion American Silver Eagles scored their own record in May at 3,636,500 — the highest level since December 1986. 15,676,500 have sold this year as of June 2, which already makes 2010 the third best year for the series. | Bob the Investor Good Morning, As has frequently been the case of late, reports that surface one day regarding what China might or might not do about it vast forex reserves, were dismissed the following day by…China itself. In this case, Wednesday's headline "China Reviews Eurozone Bond Holdings" (posted by the Financial Times, no less) turned into "China Stands Pat on Reserves Policy" (thank you, Reuters). Perhaps someday, someone will figure out how book-talk becomes news. Until then we have speculators who enjoy an occasional 'manufactured' set of temporary conditions which play straight into their hands. The euro turned higher, as did European equities, as did Dow futures, following the logical denial coming from China. The country obviously has no intention of self-inflicting collateral damage on an about one-third portion of its huge $2.4 trillion of reserves. Kind of like the late 2009 fall Internet-fueled urban myth about China dumping its dollar holding to buy…euros and gold (or so the story went, at the time). Nothing of the sort happened, but did it ever make for good forum-based chatter… (...) | New York gold futures retreated 1.0 percent on Thursday, dropping the most in a week as safe-haven buying weakened, risk appetite strengthened and a touch of profit-taking emerged. Other metals followed with their own declines, with silver falling the most at 2.1 percent. Crude oil, however, surged as prices jumped to a three-week high.
