Mast Coin Found at World Trade Center SIte

Archeologists working on the remains of an old ship found at the site of the World Trade Center in New York have come across a coin apparently used in the "stepping of the mast" – a traditional ceremony where a coin for good luck is placed beneath the mast of a newly constructed ship. Head Conservator at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory — was helping extract the remains of an 18th century ship from the mud of the World Trade Center construction site, she was asked a familiar question.

Central Bank Sees Sun Setting on 1 and 5 Kopeck Coins

The Russian Central bank has gone back to the State Duma with a request to stop production of 1 and 5 kopeck coins. Deputy Chairman George Luntovsky, says producing the coins is profoundly inefficient. "The net cost of manufacturing of 1 and 5 value kopeck coins is 47 kopeks and 69 kopecks respectively. I assume that the production is at a loss for all coins except 5 and 10 kopecks." Pavel Medvedev Deputy Chairman of Financial Committee of the State Duma believes that prior to ending the production of the coins there needs to be extensive public consultation as they still remain widely used in some parts of Russia.

Gold-Dealing Companies to Have Congressional Hearing

New legislation that would regulate gold-dealing companies' "relentless advertising" on TV will be discussed at a Sept. 23 Congressional hearing of the Subcommittee on Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection, announced Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens and Brooklyn). In a May report, Weiner accused precious metals and rare coins companies such as Goldline International Inc. of using "aggressive and high-pressure" sales tactics and conservative spokespersons like Fox News' personality Glenn Beck of selling overpriced gold coins.

Mint Employee Suspected of Stealing Tens of Thousands of Coins

Police suspect that the production chief of the Mint of Finland has stolen tens of thousands of euros in coins.The thefts are believed to have started in the spring of 2009 and continued through early this month when the suspect was detained. The 37-year-old suspect has worked at the mint for several years, and police say that he has no previous criminal record. The investigation is in its early stages, and there was no immediate indication of how he managed to get the coins out of the production facility in Vantaa.

A James Buchanan Presidential dollar has been found with a plain edge. So far, it is the only one reported. John Porter, a retired Navy veteran living in Port Charlotte, Fla., found it while searching Philadelphia rolls he obtained from a local bank. This is the second time in just a few weeks that 2010 United States Mint "golden dollars" have been found missing the edge inscription or with what some call a "smooth edge." The edge inscriptions intended for Presidential and Native American dollars since 2009 include the date, mintmark, E PLURIBUS UNUM and 13 stars.
